Camcorder – das Auge der Welt, wenn kein anderer hinguckt
Der politisch engagierte Dokumentarfilm und die Arbeit von Videoaktivisten haben in den letzten Jahren zunehmend Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Gründe dafür sind nicht nur neue Protestformen der Ökologie- und Anti-Globalisierungsbewegung, die Anti-Bush-Kampagnen und der Widerstand gegen die weltweite Einschränkung demokratischer Rechte. Es sind auch die modernen digitalen Techniken der Information und der schnellen Dokumentation – von der Digitalkamera bis zum Internet – die für eine weltweite Verbreitung auch jenseits der etablierten Medien sorgen. Organisationen wie Attac, Greenpeace, Human Rights Watch oder Witness nutzen die Möglichkeiten dokumentarischer Filmarbeit ebenso wie die verschiedensten Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), die vielfach in Entwicklungsländern tätig sind.
Auf der Tagung Camcorder Revolution in Köln werden aktuelle Filme aus dem skizzierten Spektrum gezeigt. Organisationen wie Witness/USA, Amberfilm/Großbritannien, Vikalp/Indien, Indymedia und Filmemacher wie Katerina Cizek ("Seeing is Believing") oder Produzenten wie Jim Gilliam ("Outfoxed" und "Uncovered: The War on Iraq"), die sich mit sozialen Bewegungen vernetzen, stellen ihre Arbeit vor. Die Tagung dient der gegenseitigen Kontaktaufnahme und der Vernetzung solcher Aktivitäten.

Politically committed documentaries and the work of video-activists have been attracting international attention over the last years. Handicams have become ‘the eyes of the world when no one else is watching’.
This is accounted for not only by new forms of protest of environmental and anti-globalization movements, anti-Bush campaigns and the resistance against worldwide restrictions of democratic rights in the wake of anti-terror laws. Also the emergence of new digital media ranging from the world wide web to camcorder technologies help to report social problems and political conflicts. Organizations such as Attac, Amnesty, Human Rights Watch, Witness et al. further the possibilities of documentary reporting as
well as many Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), which are working especially in countries of the ‘Third World’.
At the conference documentaries of video-activists, filmmakers and journalists will be shown and discussed. Organizations like Witness/USA, Amberfilm/UK, Vikalp/India, Indymedia and filmmakers like Katerina Cizek (“Seeing is believing”, Canada 2002) and Jim Gilliam (“Outfoxed”, “Uncovered: The War on Iraq” 2003 USA), who work together with social movements and NGO’s will explain and discuss the use of documentary film work for their activities. In lectures, panels and workshops not only the production but also the distribution of these films by television and festivals will be an important topic. The conference is also meant to support the international cooperation and to demonstrate the importance of these activities for a democratic use of these new media.
