Officially founded on February 11, 1969 "Dance Theatre of Harlem" made history as the only all-black neo-classical ballet company. The film presents its founder and director, Arthur Mitchell, who in 1955 had been the first African-American male dancer to become a permanent member of a major American ballet company, the New York City Ballet. First envisioned as a school to serve the black community after Martin Luther King's assassination, Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into an internationally renowned ballet company. Today it is interracial and its repertory encompasses classical, modern and ethnically oriented works.
Das offiziell am 11. Februar 1969 gegründete "Dance Theatre of Harlem" machte als erste neo-klassische Ballettkompanie, in der nur Schwarze tanzten, Geschichte.
Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht ihr Gründer und Leiter, Arthur Mitchell, der 1955 der erste afro-amerikanische Tänzer in einer bedeutenden amerikanischen Kompanie - dem New York City Ballet - war. Das zuerst nach der Ermordung von Martin Luther King als Schule für die schwarze Gemeinschaft gedachte Dance Theatre of Harlem ist heute eine international anerkannte Ballettkompanie, in der alle ethnischen Gruppen vertreten sind und dessen Repertoire klassische, moderne und ethnisch orientierte Werke umfaßt.
