Joining forces to create a remarkable tribute to the late Alvin Ailey, legendary choreographer-dancer Judith Jamison, performance artist/actress Anna Deavere Smith, and acclaimed filmmaker Orlando Bagwell have created a spellbinding blend of theater and dance. "Hymn" features the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performing Jamison's choreography to Smith's synthesis of the dancers' memories of working with Ailey. Archival footage and interviews are also incorporated to tell the story of a man who transformed the experience of his life and his culture to become a trailblazer of American modern dance.
