Time Steps comprises of ten short dance films which thematize dance in private rooms and in the ambience of personal everyday life. Shown are dancers who start dancing - inspired by private archival film footage from the 1920s and 30s. Historical film footage of a step dance transform into a wild modern dance in an office, an erotic veil dance is being performed in shorts and a woollen hat, the formal step dance duet of two boys inspires a ten-year-old to perform a professional break dance.

Beenhakker was a dancer with the Wuppertal Dance Theater of Pina Bausch and has worked with choreographers such as Amanda Miller, Jennifer Muller, Krisztina de Chatel and Susan Marshall/Phillip Glass. He danced for film, television and in industrial advertising films. In 2002, he began a career as a filmmaker and received international awards for his dance films. He is the founder and director of the annual dance festival "cinedans" in Amsterdam
